How to Start a DIY Solar Setup: Looking for Guidance

Asked By CraftySkywalker42 On

I'm thinking about setting up a DIY solar power system and could really use some advice. Is there a website or resource that lists everything I need to order on my own? Additionally, does anyone here offer installation services for a fee? I'd also appreciate recommendations on the best brands or models for a solar setup. Apologies if this question has been asked before or if it's out of place here.

I feel your pain! I'm trying to set up a small system for my shed first, so I can learn and then apply that to a bigger home setup later. It's tricky finding a good parts list, though! I think starting with a single 100W panel with an MPPT controller is a good way to go, and then scaling up with features like battery storage and a larger inverter as you learn more.

I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all guide for what to buy since each setup depends on your specific needs and installation. I've found that taking free installation courses from manufacturers like Enphase can be really helpful. I chose Enphase microinverters because I wanted flexibility—my roof has an east-west facing layout, which means shading is a concern. You might also want to look up the triangle of cheap, easy, and right; you can really only choose two of those!

Totally agree! Tailoring the setup to your particular environment is key—plus learning through those courses instead of just following a checklist can save you a lot of headaches.

Before you start buying anything, don't forget to check your local laws and regulations. Sometimes there are permits or certifications needed to do DIY installations. For example, here in the UK, it isn't super strict, but knowing the legalities will save you a lot of trouble down the line.

I shared my DIY install experience online, which breaks everything down in detail. If you're looking for ideas based on your location, OpenSolar is a neat tool to play with. It helps you visualize panel placements and calculate potential output. The options can be overwhelming, but starting with the basics can guide you along.

Thanks for sharing! I’ve heard good things about OpenSolar, and I’m definitely going to check out your install. Every little bit helps when figuring out the right gear!
