How to Start Building a Bookshelf as a Complete Beginner?

Hey everyone! I'm completely new to woodworking. I wouldn't even call myself a beginner since I only have some basic experience with simple tools. I've been browsing online for shelves, but they're super pricey for what they offer. I'm curious about how I can actually start building a small bookshelf. I don't have any electric saws, just a regular hand saw. What tools would you recommend I get, and do you have any tips or finishing techniques I should know about? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First off, what tools are in your arsenal right now? If you're considering powered options, I'd definitely recommend investing in a good table saw. With a decent table saw, you’ll be able to tackle most of your woodworking projects. Grab a couple of blades—one for ripping and one for crosscutting. You'll also need a few basic accessories: squares, a tape measure, clamps, and a block plane for smoothing edges. After you've got the table saw, think about adding a band saw or a miter saw depending on what you end up making.

If you're sticking to hand tools, a single hand saw isn’t enough for both ripping and crosscutting, so look into getting another saw. You’ll also want some chisels, a mallet, and the same squares and clamps. They'll really help you out in your projects!

Thanks for the tips! I've got most of the hand tools you've mentioned, but I need to check for the jigs. I think I have access to some power tools from a friend's garage too, which is great. I want to build a sturdy bookshelf with 4-6 shelves that’ll last a while but I'm feeling a bit lost on where to start with my plans. It's kind of overwhelming! ?

I know it's tough starting out, but don't let the idea of a table saw scare you! It might sound intimidating, but it's a game changer once you get comfortable with it. For your bookshelf, start with some basic dimensions and designs on paper. Even a sketch helps! You can use materials like plywood which is affordable and easy to work with. Just remember, measure twice and cut once. You'll be fine!

I appreciate the encouragement! I'll make sure to work on my measurements. Any tips on good plywood thickness for shelves?
