How to Start Seeds Indoors the Right Way?

Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie trying to grow some seeds indoors using a sprouting tray. I've got various seeds in there, and some have already started sprouting. I gently transferred those to larger jiffy-strips and placed them under a grow light, while I'm letting the other seeds continue germinating in the dark. Is this the right thing to do? Thanks for any advice!

If you moved them soon after they sprouted, that's not ideal. In the future, turning the lights on for the whole tray once the first few seeds begin to sprout can help promote overall growth. As for what to do now, it’s best to leave things as they are and introduce lights for the rest of the seeds once they start to germinate. Just keep an eye on your little ones and hope for the best!

How far along were the seeds that you moved? Generally, it's recommended to wait until they develop a couple of true leaves before transplanting them into larger pots. When they're really small and delicate, moving them can be risky, and they might not survive the transition. Also, seeds don’t necessarily need darkness to germinate, so it’s perfectly fine to have your grow lights on for the entire sprouting tray while you’re waiting for other seeds to pop up.
