Hey everyone! I'm dealing with a bit of a problem in my attic. I've got this duct coming from my HVAC system that is just blasting cold air into the attic, which doesn't seem ideal. The attic has a mechanical room with a full-sized doorway where the HVAC and water heater are located. I can share some pics for context, but my main question is—what's the best way to handle this? Do I need to consult someone, or can I do something myself? Any advice would be super helpful!

Your attic seems well air-sealed based on the spray foam I see. This means you really should keep that supply duct connected to the attic to maintain airflow. It’s actually not uncommon to see systems designed this way. It can save on bills by regulating temperatures!
It sounds like you might have what's known as a conditioned attic. This setup keeps the insulation in the roof area, making the attic part of your living space for temperature control. If you cut off that duct, your attic could end up super hot and humid, affecting the temperature downstairs and possibly causing condensation issues. It’s best to leave the duct as is or get a professional's advice first!
