How to Tackle a DIY Grid-Tied Solar System?

Asked By CraftyNinja88 On

I'm planning to install a grid-tied solar setup with 14 panels along with battery backup, but the whole idea feels overwhelming. The engineering, permitting, and installation seem pretty complex. I've received several quotes, and while I get that labor is costly, I can't justify spending an additional $10k on top of hardware and permits. That extra cost is making it difficult for me to choose solar. I've found a contractor that I like, but even his quote is around $7k for his work ($27k total).

I think I have the skills to do the install myself, but how can I make sure I'm properly prepared? I even offered the contractor a consulting fee, but he turned it down due to time constraints and insurance issues. Has anyone successfully navigated the entire DIY process for a grid-tied system? I could really use some insights and tips to make this less daunting!

Just start small if you're feeling uncertain! I'm going with just 6 panels and a backup generator to test the waters. It’ll be a manageable project to start with and build your confidence.

In North Carolina, I found permits cost about $400 plus $5 per panel and $400 per inverter, plus about $200 for electrical. It can get pricey, but it's much cheaper if you go DIY.

Thanks for the info! That helps put things into perspective; I just need to ensure my calculations are spot on.

I started with zero knowledge and ended up doing a 39 panel install on my house. It was much simpler than I expected! Planning your setup in detail beforehand really helps—know every bolt and screw you're going to need!

Did you have any plans for permitting? Was your system grid-tied?

DIY is definitely a lot of work! Just a heads up, I hit a wall with the bureaucracy and paperwork, which took weeks for approvals. If you can handle the paperwork, the installation won't be the challenging part for you.

Absolutely, you can do it! Check out Project Solar; they handle a lot of the engineering and permit prep for you so you can focus on the hands-on work. I installed 15 panels by myself (with a little help for lifting) and it was a great experience. My system's been running great for over two years now!

I did a DIY solar install and it turned out really well! If you have good DIY skills, especially in measuring and electrical work, permitting can be straightforward, depending on whether your local authority allows owner-builder permits. Many equipment suppliers can provide plan sets that meet permit requirements. Let me know if you want recommendations for companies that can help with those!

I think I’ll need those recommendations! If I have a solid plan, I feel I can manage the install, but I'm nervous about getting the plans sorted right.
