I'm looking to convert my bedroom into a master suite with an open loft area by removing the ceiling. The attic currently has a door with stairs leading up to it, and while it's not fully finished, it is big enough for storage. My plan is to extend the bedroom by eliminating the closet and the far wall, getting rid of the attic door, and creating an open concept with the existing staircase that will have a railing. I want to remove the ceiling in the bedroom, adding a railing around the loft to create a cozy office or hangout spot. However, I'm uncertain if I need to add support beams in the attic after removing the ceiling joists, or if I can just remove the ceiling and finish the attic easily. Any thoughts? It's really exciting to see your plans for transforming that space! Just a heads-up, you're probably going to need a licensed engineer or contractor before you dive in. Removing the ceiling joists can really compromise the structural integrity of your home. Better safe than sorry, right?
Definitely consult an engineer before making changes. Even if you think the attic structure is solid with collar ties and purlin braces, removing joists isn't something to take lightly.
