Hey everyone! I'm in zone 7a and I've got a bunch of cannas that have really outgrown their space. I plan to dig them up after the first frost, but I'm looking for some advice on transplanting. I've got a nice new spot for them but I'm worried about doing this late in the season. My goal is to give them room to grow their rhizomes better. I don't need the foliage right now, so I'm contemplating my options: Should I cut off all the foliage and just move the rhizomes, or should I transplant the whole plants with their leaves still attached? What do you think will help the rhizomes grow best? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I'm in zone 8b and I usually move mine in October. When I do transplant, I prefer moving them whole without cutting the foliage. It seems to give them a better chance to recover in their new spot. Plus, I imagine the leaves still help with the process a bit by providing some photosynthesis as they adjust. If you’re okay losing some foliage though, you could try just moving the rhizomes too, but it might take them longer to get established. Whatever you choose, they’ll likely bounce back in the spring!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's helpful to know! I think I'll try moving them whole and see how it goes.
