How to Water My Yard Using a Well Without Damaging the Pump?

I'm curious about how many of you water your yards using a well. Do you worry about damaging your well pump? Currently, I have a 40-gallon tank that holds about 12 gallons of water, which lasts me roughly 4 minutes before my pump kicks in. The fill cycle for the tank takes about a minute. I'm looking for solutions that don't involve installing a $5,000 constant pressure system.

You might want to think about getting a bigger bladder tank or even connecting a few tanks together. Starting up the pump puts more stress on it than just letting it run continuously. Also, check your drilling records to ensure your well’s recovery rate can keep up with your current usage—it sounds like you might be alright if you’re pumping that fast already!

I don't water my yard at all—not because I'm worried about my well, but on principle! I think it’s better to use native plants that can survive on natural moisture. I make an exception for new plants that need a little extra care until they're established.

A well professional once told me that frequent cycling of the pump can lead to failure, and it's actually better for the pump to run continuously. If you can, consider switching to a system that allows for more steady pressure.

That's exactly what my irrigation guy mentioned too! Continuous pumping is definitely the way to go.
