How Worried Should I Be About Asbestos in My New Home?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some reassurance regarding asbestos after moving into a house built in 1971. Recently, I learned from neighbors on our Facebook page that their homes tested positive for asbestos, specifically in drywall mud. After moving in, we had some electrical work done that involved cutting drywall, and I noticed some dust left behind. I also accidentally brought in plastic bins that might have picked up this dust. With my newborn's health in mind, I'm really anxious about this. We have a big air purifier in the room where the bins were, but I want to know how concerned I should be about potential exposure. Any advice or experiences shared would be greatly appreciated!

For casual exposure, there’s really near zero risk unless you’re constantly disturbing the material. If it’s encapsulated and not damaged, it’s usually fine. Make sure to use proper cleanup methods with a HEPA vacuum if you’re ever doing any work near it. That way you can keep things safe!

Honestly, you shouldn’t panic too much. Asbestos usually isn’t a concern unless it's disturbed repeatedly over time. A lot of people have done renovations in old homes without issues for years. Just make sure to clean up any dust with a damp cloth to avoid disturbing any materials further. You might also want to have the paint and any old materials tested, as lead can be a concern too. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks for easing my mind! Definitely makes me feel a bit better knowing people have dealt with this before without major issues. I’ll take your advice and do some cleaning.

If there’s any doubt, just get the materials tested. That’s the most reliable way to know for sure. It sounds like it could be a good idea, especially since others in your area have found asbestos. Focus on your daughter’s safety and peace of mind—it’s worth getting it checked out!

I totally agree with you! I’m planning to send off samples to a lab. I’d rather be proactive than worry about it later.
