Hybrid vs. AC Mini Split for Off-Grid Living: What’s the Best Choice?

I'm setting up an off-grid system and trying to decide between a hybrid setup or an AC mini split unit. I'm considering the EG4 mini split, which allows me to plug in solar panels directly. Here are what I see as the pros and cons of the hybrid system:

**Pros:**
- You don't need to invert the power, which I believe should make it more efficient.

**Cons:**
- Some panels are dedicated solely to the mini split, meaning they can't be used for general house energy needs.
- There currently isn't a two-zone hybrid option, so I'd have to either choose a single zone or install two units.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on where I might be wrong or what your experiences have been!

I wrestled with this decision, too, before buying three EG4 units (installing them in the spring). If you’ve got the panel and roof space, I recommend going with the hybrid. The cost isn't that different, and while you might not use all the power on mild days, it offloads some tasks from your inverter and adds a nice redundancy.

Good to know! Just to clarify, can these units tap into unused solar watts?

Honestly, I think dedicating panels just for the mini split feels a bit wasteful. Instead, focus on getting the most efficient mini split you can, especially if you plan to use it for heating during colder months.

Totally agree! It makes more sense to use extra panels for charging your batteries instead. The heat pump will only utilize those dedicated panels when it's running.
