I accidentally bought peat compost. What should I do with it?

I bought a large bag of compost and only noticed afterward that it contains peat. I’m concerned about the environmental impact, but returning it may not undo anything. Is there a sensible way to use it, or should I try to return it?

If the bag is usable, I’d put it to the gardening use you originally planned rather than let it go to waste. Returning it probably won’t reverse the extraction, and it could simply be discarded. For your next purchase, check the label and choose peat-free.

That seems like a reasonable way to handle a purchase you didn’t intend to make.

The concern is real: peatlands are valuable habitats and store a lot of carbon, and peat forms very slowly. But buying one bag by mistake doesn’t make you responsible for the wider supply chain. Using what you have and making a different choice next time is a practical response.

You can grow the plants you had in mind, but treat the compost as a growing medium with particular properties, not a universal mix. Check the bag’s instructions and your plants’ needs. If it seems too moisture-retentive or otherwise unsuitable for a particular pot, blending it with a more appropriate material may help, rather than using it by itself.

Thanks, I’ll use it where it suits the plants and look more carefully at the label next time.
