Ideas for Improving My 2×4 Shelving Setup?

I've got these prebuilt 2x4 shelves in my garage (they're about 6' tall, 8' long, and 2' deep), and I'm looking to make them more functional. My goal is to store smaller bins for easier access, ideally at chest height. I was thinking about adding another shelf, possibly made out of wood, but I'm also considering alternatives like a ClosetMaid shelf that allows visibility down through it, or some kind of drawer setup. I want to make this space practical since the existing shelves aren't amazing but do the job. I'm particularly dealing with dimensions where the middle region is 44" wide and 33.5" tall, which makes it tricky for storing various bins like the IKEA KUGGIS or larger containers. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Considering the weight you’ll be putting on those shelves, adding some structural support to the back could really help stabilize everything. If you're unsure about future usage, using metal shelf pins instead of plastic will allow you to easily adjust shelf heights later. Just make sure to keep the heavier items on the bottom shelves and think about anchoring it to the wall for extra safety, especially if kids might be around. Keep in mind that peg holes will really improve flexibility!

That makes a lot of sense! I hadn’t thought about peg holes for adjustable shelving. I’ll definitely check out the metal pin options, thanks!
