Hey folks! I'm looking for some advice on plants or trees that can help block the view from my neighbor's 2nd floor window that overlooks my garden. We live in a U-shaped cul-de-sac, and while initially, it didn't bother us, it has become an issue since my neighbor leans out of her bathroom window, smoking and watching us constantly. I've already tried using tall black bamboo for some screening, but I'm not sure they'll grow bushy enough without being planted in the ground, which I'm concerned about due to their invasive roots. I'm hoping to find something that grows fast and provides decent coverage within a couple of years, but doesn't completely block out light for my neighbors. Any suggestions? I'm considering pleached trees or a tall red robin, but I'm not too knowledgeable about trees. What would work best?

If you're set on trees, I'd suggest looking for Portuguese laurel or silver birch; you can get them at 8ft tall already, which should give you good cover. Yes, the price goes up with size, but it's worth it to avoid waiting years for smaller plants to mature. Just make sure to plant them far enough back on your property line to avoid any root issues!
Hey! I've had some luck with clumping bamboo, but it might not reach high enough for a second-story window. For something more substantial, I've planted Cercis Canadensis 'Forest Pansy' and Amelanchier 'Red Robin', both of which are beautiful deciduous trees that grow tall but won't completely block sky light for your neighbors. You could also look at Magnolia Grandiflora, which comes in smaller varieties and grows nicely above fence height, plus you can use the space underneath for other plants!

Thanks, great suggestions! I'll have to check out some nurseries nearby for those taller options.
