I'm living in a semi-rural area with a well, and I'm really frustrated with the iron in our water. We currently just have a sediment filter, which needs replacing, and we drink fridge-filtered water. But I'm tired of our clothes not getting clean and having constant rust stains in the shower and toilet. My husband insists that the iron levels are normal and not harmful, arguing against getting a reverse-osmosis system because he thinks it might affect our septic system's bacteria and strip away beneficial nutrients. While I see that a little iron is normal, this seems excessive to me. What do you all think? This has been a point of contention between us!

Listen, your husband is mistaken. The iron is wreaking havoc on your fixtures and appliances. I recommend calling in a pro who specializes in water systems. My dad’s been in the water business for over 50 years, and he’s always advised against ignoring iron issues. A good filter can make a huge difference!
If you’re worried about missing out on nutrients because of reverse osmosis, just take supplements. But seriously, too much iron can be risky for your health. You should definitely do a water test to measure levels and see how bad it is. And make sure he’s not at risk for hemochromatosis!
Ouch, that’s a hard hit! He’s an engineer, so I guess I expect more from him.
You definitely need a water softener and a reverse osmosis system for drinking water. I can’t imagine how tough it is with those iron stains everywhere! My partner and I installed a softener, and it was less than $1k. It took care of the rust issues right away. You should check out local options for installation; it can really improve your quality of life!
Thanks for the advice!

I totally get that! I think he’s just hesitant to spend money. It’s about the quality of our water and fixtures!
