I'm looking to build a desk, but I currently lack the skills and tools to craft a nice tabletop myself. I found a walnut tabletop for around $1000 after a coupon, measuring 24" x 72" x 1.25", made from 8" wide boards. My plan is to cut it down and finish it to use not just as a desk top but also to create some built-in shelves. Does this sound like a reasonable option for a project like mine?

Honestly, I’d rather invest in tools to make it myself than just slap some legs on a pre-made top. It feels more rewarding that way! But if you're really cramped for time and skills, maybe go for it? Just keep in mind that if you plan to weld the base, it could be a fun project!
I think $1000 isn't too outrageous, considering the size and quality of walnut. I recently got a panel made for about $500 that was smaller than the one you're looking at. Just be cautious about the cutting part—planning and finishing it might require skills you don't currently have, so weighing your options is key!
I appreciate the support! I really just want to ensure I’m not overspending for something I could handle myself later.
In my opinion, that's a steep price. The walnut itself might cost around $350 if you sourced it locally, and if you can find someone to help you with milling and finishing, it could be cheaper overall. Just keep in mind the risks of cutting it yourself—there might be dowels or other joints that could complicate things. You could also check out shared workspaces that might help with labor at a reasonable rate.
Good call! I’ll definitely look into how the pieces might be joined before I decide. Thanks for the tip!

That’s a fair point! I was thinking it could be a quick solution, but making my own might be more satisfying.
