I've been on the lookout for a 6" or 8" jointer and came across a Powermatic 60B 8" with a 2HP single-phase motor. They're asking $1,050 for it, but the seller mentioned that the beds might need some adjustment. The photos show the machine is clean and rust-free. Considering that a similar new model retails for around $2,800, is $1,050 a reasonable price? Also, how challenging is it to adjust the beds myself?

Powermatic used to be top-notch, but it’s not quite like that now. They're still a solid choice, especially the older US-made models. Adjusting the tables isn't too tricky—just search for some adjustment videos online. Remember, if you're looking at a new jointer for $2,800, you'll also have to account for taxes and shipping, which can add up. Buying used like this is a huge chance to save! When I bought my used 8" jointer, I checked it out thoroughly with safety glasses and a square. Make sure to check yours as well before buying it!

"... a jointer is only slightly more complicated than a brick."—that made me chuckle! Glad to hear it’s rust-free. I’d definitely bring a straight edge and some scrap wood, plus your PPE. Moving it is a challenge too, so good luck with that! Make sure you have a plan for getting it into your basement!
