Is $12.5k a Fair Price for Epoxy Relining My Sewage Pipes?

I'm dealing with a plumbing problem where sewage is backing up into my bathtub. A plumbing company dug a 12ft hole in my yard to remove some roots that were damaging my pipes, which already cost me $11.8k. They've identified the main root but found three more as well. Now, they're suggesting that I epoxy line 25ft of pipes leading to the street, and the estimate for this work is between $10k and $12.5k. Is this a reasonable price for this kind of repair?

No way that's a good deal. They should only suggest the epoxy option if it’s more complicated to dig the rest of the pipe out. Have you compared other quotes? You might find better options out there!

Right? Why settle at the first quote? Always better to shop around.

100%—get three quotes at least! People overcharge when they think you won't check.

Honestly, you're getting ripped off. If they already dug the hole, it would make more sense to just replace the pipes instead of doing a relining, which is primarily meant to avoid excavation. You could save a lot of money that way!

Exactly! If the pipe is exposed like that, there's no reason to not replace it completely.

Agreed, and lining doesn’t really fix the root problem; it just masks it.

I had a similar situation and paid significantly less by just replacing the pipes. It's definitely possible to do it for around $5k to $8k! If roots are the issue, you might also consider removing the plants causing the problem.

Yeah! I replaced about 20 feet of my sewer for around $3k and it’s been solid since.

Definitely get rid of those plants—it's a long-term solution!
