I recently had a company called EcoView come to my house trying to sell me new windows. While I don't need windows since mine are fairly new, they do other home repairs too, like soffits and garage doors, which I need. My soffits have some rot, and a couple are falling off the gables, so I got an estimate from them. The estimator didn't measure but guessed that I need about 250 square feet of fascia and soffit work. They plan to put vinyl soffits over the existing ones, add drip edges, and promised to replace any rot they find at no extra cost. They're offering all this for $12k, down from a usual price of $15k. I'm curious if this is a reasonable price? I just want to replace the rotten wood and understand what might be causing the rot. Is vinyl a good choice for water resistance? Am I getting a fair deal here, or could I be getting ripped off? This is my first house, and I really don't know what to make of it.

My advice? Definitely avoid this company. Having door-knocking salespeople trying to sell you repairs isn't a good sign. It's often better to choose a company that doesn't rely on aggressive marketing tactics. You can usually find more reliable businesses through word of mouth or reputable online reviews instead. It’s also risky to go with the first quote you get, especially since it's hard to tell what's accurate without a proper measurement.
Always get at least two more estimates before deciding! It’s a good practice and will give you a better idea of the market rate for what you need. Plus, the fact that they didn’t measure anything is a bit concerning. That could lead to an inaccurate estimation. Good luck with your repairs!
