Hey everyone! I got a quote of $17,000 from a contractor to build a custom bookshelf that's about 10 feet high and 8 feet long here in Brooklyn, NYC. Do you think this price is fair? I'm also considering trying to build it myself since I have some basic woodworking skills and tools, but I'm not sure the best way to attach the vertical walls to the existing wall. Any thoughts or advice? Here's a link to my design: [imgur link](https://imgur.com/a/lttA7up)

That $17,000 price tag is wild! You should definitely get a couple more quotes to compare. Sounds way overpriced to me!
Just to give you a reference, last year I got quotes for similar work. A small carpenter quoted me $3K, and a higher-end carpenter was $11K. I'd say this quote is sky-high! Have you thought about using premade kits or IKEA for a similar look? You could easily add some trim and lighting for a professional feel.
That's exactly what I was thinking! Combine some premade pieces with your personal touch.
Honestly, if you have some experience, building it yourself could save you a ton! I've seen people build similar shelves for under $1,000. Plus, it's a fun project!
Agreed! I love tackling DIY projects. It's a great way to save money and get exactly what you want.

Right? Unless it's made of some super rare materials, that's just way too high.
