Is $20K a Fair Estimate for a Shower and Soaking Tub Remodel?

Hey everyone! I'm dealing with a pretty small bathroom that can only fit a toilet, a vanity with a sink, and a 72-inch shower alcove. Right now, it's down to the studs with a terrible acrylic shower stall, although my vanity and toilet are nice and new.

I want to convert the back of the bathroom to have a new shower enclosure with room for a shower head, a stool, and at the far end, I'm looking to add a Japanese-style soaking tub that's about 41 inches in diameter.

A local plumber has quoted me around $20,000 for the plumbing work, which includes removing the old shower stall, moving the shower head and drain, installing a separate drain for the tub, and setting up the new fixtures. If I skip the tub and just expand the shower, it would reportedly cost about half that. I'm hoping the quote covers tiling the floor and the shower enclosure too.

What do you all think? Does that sound reasonable? I'm located in the Northeast, so I'd love to hear from both homeowners and pros!

Estimates can really vary a lot, so it’s smart to get a few quotes. Ask questions and take notes during the bidding process to compare who might be the best fit for your project.

If that quote doesn’t include waterproofing and tiling, the plumber might be charging way too much. I recently had a similar job done for $2,400, which included removing a steam radiator and capping pipes, plus moving some other plumbing around. That was in a HCOL area in the Northeast too, so it’s possible to get a better deal.

That’s more in line with what I was expecting! If he’s in Vermont, could you share his info? Thanks!
