I'm in North Carolina and just had a plumber check out my old 40-gallon gas hot water heater because I noticed a gas smell near the control panel. Thankfully, he found no gas leaks but did discover a small leak at the base of the tank. Since the unit is from 2009, I asked for a replacement quote, which came back at $3600 for a model with a 6-year warranty and $3900 for a 10-year warranty. This seems steep to me, especially since I've never replaced one before. I'm getting another estimate from a local company, but I'd appreciate hearing what others have experienced in similar situations to gauge if this quote is reasonable.

That price seems really high. I recommend focusing on smaller, independent shops for quotes. $3600 is excessive, and multiple quotes can help you understand what’s fair. Consider telling them it’s not an emergency, so they don't inflate the price.
I just replaced mine and it cost $1600 for the same setup. $3600 does seem quite high, so definitely check around for more quotes!
I just paid $1800 for a similar installation. You should really get at least two more quotes to compare prices and options.
