I'm considering some options for my driveway and recently received a quote for a few different configurations. I'm looking at either a 320 sq ft chip seal driveway with a 25' x 25' gravel area at the end (about 4 cubic yards of gravel), or just a 320 sq ft gravel driveway with the same gravel area—but that one would require about 6 cubic yards in total. For the chip seal, I asked for the cheapest option available, and for the gravel, I specified 2A gravel.
The quote I received was around $4000 for the installation, which honestly feels pretty steep. It sounds like it's about double what I expected for the chip option and even more so for the all gravel option. There's already an existing gravel driveway that's not in great shape, though they'd only need to top off the 25' by 25' area. Am I overthinking this, or could there have been a misunderstanding where the contractor thought I wanted two separate driveways? By the way, I live in Northeast PA.

Yeah, I agree that $4000 feels excessive for that work. Given the size, especially with part of it just needing a top-off, it’s worth shopping around. Make sure to compare the details of each quote too—what materials and labor costs are included can vary. And don’t hesitate to ask the contractor for a breakdown of the price!
That quote does sound on the higher side, especially since you mentioned the existing driveway just needs some topping off. It might help to wait for those other quotes before making a decision. Sometimes contractors can overestimate costs, so you could be in for a pleasant surprise with the others! Good luck!
