I just found out that my parents are planning to pay $4,000 to have some insulation removed from their crawlspace. The house is around 25 years old, and the crawlspace is approximately 2,500 square feet. The guy coming in is the same person who previously encapsulated the crawlspace. I'm skeptical about this price – is it justified, or are they being taken for a ride? What's the usual deal when it comes to insulation removal after encapsulation?

I wouldn’t trust the same person who did the original encapsulation to pull insulation out – if they messed it up before, why should they get another chance? You mentioned there are no rodent issues and that it’s just batts of insulation. I think they should reconsider this plan. Maybe just get a maintenance check from a different contractor?
Honestly, $4K for 2,500 square feet isn’t the wildest quote I’ve seen, especially if getting to the crawlspace is tricky. But based on what you’ve shared, it seems unnecessary. If they didn’t address insulation issues during the encapsulation and now they want to charge this much, it sounds a bit sketchy. Just a heads up, a lot of encapsulation companies can be a bit dodgy with their pricing, so definitely double-check with someone else before they commit.
$4,000 sounds pretty steep for just removing insulation. I'm curious about why they feel the need to do it in the first place. Was there a health concern with the insulation materials? It's possible they’re trying to address an issue, but if the guy who did the encapsulation didn't mention insulation removal back then, it makes you wonder what changed. Is the insulation just sitting between the joists? Typically, after an encapsulation, you shouldn’t need insulation there anymore. It might be worth getting a second opinion before proceeding.
