I'm considering hiring a contractor for some extensive masonry repair work on my rowhouse stoop stairs and landings in the NYC metro area. I've tackled most DIY projects myself, but this one is beyond my skillset. I've received a quote for $53,200, and I really have no idea if this is reasonable. I've seen a few lower prices, but I'm worried they might not have accounted for all the challenges. One contractor I've previously used does solid work, but I don't fully trust their crew to avoid cutting corners. To provide some context, the work involves demolishing the entire upper landing, removing and rebuilding the stairs and lower landing to code, and replacing the lower door which also requires masonry work on the framing. I've outlined the scope of work in detail which includes everything from demolition to construction and finishing touches. Here's the pricing breakdown: $53,200.

I agree, the price does seem on the high side. When you're dealing with larger projects, the cost differences can really add up. But in this case, the difference between bluestone and sandstone isn't going to make a huge impact on the overall pricing. Definitely worth looking for more estimates though!
That price seems pretty high from my perspective, especially since I’m used to lower costs in the Midwest. It might be a good idea to get a few more quotes to compare. If you're able to skip the bluestone and the new door, that could help lower the total cost significantly.
