Is $600 a Good Deal for a Used Shaper Origin and Workstation?

Hey everyone! I'm a beginner woodworker just starting to set up my workshop. I'm planning to build some furniture like a bed frame and a laundry basket, mostly using power tools because I have an old injury that makes using hand tools painful. I came across a Shaper Origin (Gen 1) that someone is selling for $600, along with its workstation. Assuming everything is in good condition, would this be a smart buy? Is it a valuable tool for someone just starting out, or should I stick to my plans of getting a planer, track saw, and router? Thanks for your insights!

I own one but haven't used it much. I'm planning to get my son to learn with it in his woodshop class. It’s too valuable to sell for just $600, so that shows how good of a deal this is!

Honestly, $600 is a steal! The Shaper Origin is like a smart plunge router, and even though it's not ideal for large or repetitive tasks, it shines in precision work. If I were in your shoes, I'd grab it before it’s gone. Plus, who doesn’t love a good tool score?

Totally agree! It seems like a great addition to the shop.

You're getting an amazing deal! Brand new, these things start around $3,000. Even if you find out it's not for you, I bet you could resell it for at least what you're paying. Just make sure it won’t be too heavy or cumbersome with your injury. That’s key!

Yes, definitely a concern! It’s always better to consider how it fits with your needs.

If you're just starting out, a Shaper Origin might not be the first tool I'd suggest, but at $600, it's a fantastic deal! Reconditioned ones go for about $1,800, and it's definitely a cool piece of tech. You can do some impressive things with it, although it's not a must-have for beginners. If it’s in good shape, then absolutely consider snatching it up! Just be sure it fits your current needs and plans.

That's a great point! It’s always good to weigh the pros and cons, especially with such a tech-heavy tool.

Thanks for the insight! I'll have to think about how I'd actually use it in my projects.
