I'm looking to redo the subway tile in both of my bathrooms, and I've gotten a quote of $6k from a well-reviewed husband and wife team who've been around for 50 years. This includes demo and retile of approximately 140 sq/ft total, but we are supplying most of the materials ourselves. I've seen quotes ranging from $4k to as high as $19k from various contractors, and I'm unsure about the $6k—are they fairly priced, or should I be concerned about the quality of their work? What accounts for the price variations?

I think $6k is quite reasonable, especially since there’s a lot involved in waterproofing and tiling. If the contractors know about the previous poor work, they might even be taking a risk. Just clarify what all is included in their bid before making a final decision.
Honestly, you might want to consider doing this yourself. It's a great learning experience and you can save a ton of cash. Some friends of mine redid their bathroom for around $400 doing it on their own!
From what I've seen, the higher prices often come from contractors who might not have the availability to take on more work, so they inflate costs. The $6k quote sounds pretty legit for the amount of work involved, especially if they have good reviews. Just make sure you ask about their process, like whether they’re doing proper waterproofing and removing old materials.
Exactly! If they're replacing backer board and doing a proper job, the price makes sense. Plus, with the work needing to be done in a high-rise, you could be looking at additional costs there.

But remember, it can be a lot of work if you're not experienced! If you're thinking DIY, make sure to familiarize yourself with waterproofing requirements to avoid future issues.
