Is £7,200 a Fair Price for Decking and Fencing Work?

Hey everyone! I've just received a quote for some new decking and fencing in my garden here in London. The quote covers approximately 10 fencing panels, 1 gate, and 12 posts, but I already have the materials, so they're just charging for labor. The decking is softwood measuring around 2m x 5m, and it's elevated with about three steps down from our patio door to the garden.

Included in the quote is a 2-year warranty, waste disposal, and a skip with a permit. The total comes to £7,200, including VAT. I'm not really familiar with what these types of jobs usually cost; we received a quote for just the decking last year that was about £6,000. Does this seem like a crazy price or pretty standard? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Honestly, that price sounds high-end to me, but it’s not entirely ridiculous. If you're paying that much, I’d expect top-notch work on the deck. Just remember that quality labor is crucial!

Thanks, I’ll definitely gather a few more quotes to feel confident about it.

I’d say it’s a bit on the pricey side, especially since the materials aren’t included. London does tend to add a premium of about £1k to quotes, though. Just make sure to check what kind of timber they’re using and the size of the deck joists; larger joists are generally better quality. I just did my own decking and fencing project in Glasgow and spent around £1,600 on materials alone for a similar setup. Getting multiple quotes is definitely wise!

Thanks for your reply, will deffo get more quotes! They said they'd be using deck tape, so I'll check about the joist size and treatment. Your garden looks absolutely amazing, I hope ours can get to that level one day!

That seems pretty steep, even with rising timber costs. I reckon the decking materials should only cost around £1,500 tops. I'm a bit skeptical about needing a warranty from a tradesman too. It might be best to check out more quotes and look for someone with a solid reputation.

Thank you! I actually got quoted £1,500 for fencing labor from another local tradesman as well. I’ll definitely be looking for more decking quotes to find someone reliable at a fair price.
