I'm trying to determine if using a 1/2" stubby impact wrench with a 5.0 HO battery is sufficient for automotive tasks. Should I opt for the high torque or mid torque M18 for a bit more power? Any advice would be appreciated!

As a dealer technician, I use the M18 Mid Torque in 1/2" drive along with the M12 Stubby in 3/8" drive. The mid torque handles a lot of situations well, especially for common automotive tasks.
I've got both the high torque and the stubby, and they complement each other well. The stubby is great for about 80% of fasteners, but when you encounter stubborn bolts, the high torque becomes a lifesaver.
If you’re just starting out, a mid torque is usually plenty for most jobs. High torque can be a bit overpowering for a DIYer; it could lead to stripping bolts if you're not careful. Heat, breaker bars, or even a little impact with a hammer can help if you're struggling with stuck bolts. Just be cautious!
