Is a 1/4″ Drill Bit Okay for Pre-drilling a Hole for a 5/16″ Bolt?

Hey everyone! I'm currently working on rebuilding my deck railing and I've run into a question. Can I use a 1/4" drill bit to pre-drill a hole for a 5/16" bolt? I need to anchor the posts and want to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks!

What kind of bolt are you using? If it’s a lag bolt for your posts, then it should work, but I’d recommend sticking to what's specified if the post anchor calls for a 5/16" bolt. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks! The post anchor does specifically call for that size.

Yes, you can use a 1/4" bit for that, especially if you're drilling in wood. Just be aware that you'll have to hammer the bolt in since it won't fit perfectly. But honestly, if it's an option, you should really use the correct size drill bit for a better fit and less hassle.

Good point! Just make sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your post anchors.
