Is a 1.75 HP Table Saw Enough, or Do You Really Need 3 HP?

Hey everyone! I'm considering making the jump from my cheap $100 skill saw to a more capable table saw, specifically looking at the difference between 1.75 HP and 3 HP models. I've got my eye on future furniture projects, like desks and tables, and I'm wondering if the extra power from a 3 HP saw would really make a difference for these kinds of tasks. Have any of you who own a 1.75 ever regretted not going for the 3 HP model? I'd love to hear your thoughts and any experiences you've had!

Honestly, if you're planning on ripping thick hardwoods, the 1.75 can struggle a bit. The 3 HP saws can handle it like a champ. I've been using a 1.75 HP for about four years and it's fine for my furniture and art projects. I do have a sawmill for lumber processing, but I’d consider upgrading to 3 HP if my setup changes in the future. But for now, my 1.75 works just great!

If you have the budget and the ability to set up a 220V outlet, go for the 3 HP. Nobody has ever regretted getting a bigger saw! Plus, I've upgraded from a 1.5 HP to a 3 HP SawStop, and let me tell you, it cuts through everything like butter, which is a huge upgrade in performance. Smoother, more accurate cuts without bogging down. If power isn’t an issue for you, definitely go with the more powerful option!

I might disagree with that, but spending $500 more on a $3k purchase might not be a big deal!

A 3 HP is definitely better for thicker and harder woods. However, I opted for 1.75 because I didn't want to deal with rewiring for 220 volts. For my needs, it handles everything just fine without needing that extra power. If I ever have trouble with tougher cuts, I just use a thin kerf blade and take it slow. So, for hobbyists, 1.75 gets the job done, but yeah, I'd love to have that 3 HP just for the luxury of it!

Did you end up getting a used saw?
