Is a $10k landscaping quote outrageous?

Hey everyone! I just got a quote from a landscaping company for my garden, and I'm really thrown off by it. I have a 50x30 ft area that's currently filled with overgrown weeds, 15 bushes, and a lot of stones. The plan is to remove everything and replace it with sod and river rock. I was expecting the cost to be around $3-4k, so when they hit me with $10k, I was shocked! I've never worked with contractors before and I'm unsure if this price is way out of line. Should I even bother getting more quotes or is this typical for the work I'm asking for? I'm located in SE Michigan. Any advice would be super helpful!

For what it’s worth, I had a similar project done a few years back and it came in at around $4k just for sod installation. Adding river rock definitely ups the price, but checking around can save you a lot. You might find the actual costs differ than you think, especially in your area! Remember, it’s perfectly fine to reach out and get multiple opinions rather than settling on one quote.

Honestly, that price feels steep. I totally recommend getting at least 3 quotes before making a decision. The price can vary dramatically depending on the company and their workload. A solid tip: ask for an itemized breakdown of costs. This can show you where they might be padding the bill. And if possible, you could cut down the bushes yourself or handle some of the prep work to reduce the overall cost.

I can understand your sticker shock! While $10k seems high compared to your expectations, it might actually be in the right ballpark—especially with the quantity of materials like river rock involved. But don't skip getting more bids! It can help you gauge whether you're really being overcharged. Plus, you might find a company willing to give you a better price for the same work, so it's worth your time to compare.
