Is a 14 AWG Extension Cord Safe for My Washer?

I recently bought a medium-duty 14 AWG extension cord that's rated for 15 amps, but I'm unsure if that's sufficient for my washing machine, especially since the outlet is quite a distance away. Should I be concerned about safety, or would there be a better option for an extension cord?

Using an extension cord for your washer isn't the best long-term solution. Ideally, you should install a permanent outlet closer to the washer. A typical washing machine can pull up to 15 amps, which your 14 AWG cord can handle, but if the cord is really long, you could experience voltage drops. It’s safer to use a 12 AWG cord if you're planning to stick with the extension. Just a heads up, it could lead to overheating if the cord is too long and not rated properly. Better safe than sorry!

I hear you! I didn't realize how little distance can impact it. If you do stick with the 14 AWG for now, just keep an eye on it while it runs. Maybe look into getting that 12 AWG next time, just in case!
