Is a 3.5% Moisture Content Too Low for My Walnut?

Asked By CraftyNinja22 On

I just bought some rustic walnut from Advantage Lumber and I've got it acclimating in my basement workshop. When it arrived, the moisture content was around 3.5%. Should I be concerned that this is too low? I'd really appreciate any advice or insights you might have. Thanks!

Wow, 3.5% is pretty low! Where are you located? If you’re in a really dry area, that makes sense. But seriously, just make sure you're letting it acclimate before you start working with it—give it a few days for sure. Also, what kind of moisture meter are you using?

Definitely double-check that your moisture meter is accurate! Some meters can adjust for different species, like the Orion ones, and that can really affect the readings. Just make sure it's set correctly for your walnut.
