Is a 4×7 Mudroom Big Enough for My Space?

I'm considering turning a little spot in my garage into a mudroom, roughly 4 feet by 7 feet. The idea is to set up hooks, shelves, and a bench to create a functional space as you exit to the garage. This mudroom wouldn't be a pass-through; it would be a standalone area off to the left. I'm curious if this size will be practical for our needs. Can anyone share their thoughts or experiences with similar setups?

A picture and some plans would definitely help clarify your idea! It’s hard to assess without seeing the space. Are you thinking about bumping out a new exterior structure, or just framing it within your existing garage?

I haven’t got any designs yet since it's all in the planning phase! It's going to be framed out from the inside of the garage, connecting to the house wall.

Consider using a double bifold door at the front. That can keep the dirt from the garage out and might give you a little more usable space inside without making it feel too closed in.

Well, you generally need at least 3 feet of space for walking comfortably, so that 4x7 might feel cramped! It could end up more like a closet rather than a mudroom unless you plan carefully.

But isn’t 4 feet wide enough? I just want hooks and some storage, nothing too fancy!
