Is a 6″ Cabinet Jointer a Step Up or Down From My 8″ Jointers?

Hey everyone! I'm currently using an 8" Rikon benchtop jointer and it has worked well for me within my limited space and 120V setup. However, as I'm diving into bigger projects, I'm struggling to achieve precise results on longer pieces. I'm also having trouble getting the fence square with the infeed and outfeed tables.

I've been looking into cabinet style jointers but can't find any 8" models that are compatible with 120V as I've maxed out my electrical panel and can't upgrade it right now.

So, I'm wondering, would switching to a 6" cabinet jointer be an upgrade or a downgrade for me? Most of my local lumberyard boards are 7" wide, so I'm a bit concerned about losing usable stock.

Also, if you have any recommendations for hobbyist-level jointers that work on 120V, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

If you're running low on space and want versatility, you could use a sled and a planer, since my planer runs on 120V and I’ve managed to joint boards up to 11" wide this way. There’s a great video from 3x3 Custom demonstrating the process if you want to check that out!

You might want to check out the Laguna 1.75hp 110V 8" jointer. It could fit the bill since it runs on the same 120V setup you have. I know it’s a bit on the higher end, but it could be worth considering if you can stretch your budget!

Thanks for the tip! I had no idea that was an option, but I’m aiming for something with shorter tables and a lower price, if possible.

A 6" jointer can definitely be sufficient for most hobby work! I've face jointed 9" and even 8" wide boards with mine and it works just fine to prepare for the planer. For a good option on a budget, look into the Grizzly 6" jointer with a cabinet stand. It’s highly rated and reasonably priced!
