Is a French Drain Still Effective Without Filter Fabric?

I recently had an excavator dig a trench for a French drain, but I noticed they're running the pipe without any filter fabric. They're planning to cover it with 2-inch rock instead. I've seen many resources that suggest using filter fabric, so I'm curious if it's really necessary or if it's fine the way it is.

It really depends on a few factors. First, check what your contract specifies about the materials for the French drain. If they’re using a black perforated pipe alongside a solid pipe, that might be fine as long as the gravel they're using is adequate. Just make sure to ask your contractor for clarification on their approach.

Yeah, definitely ask about the materials! Sometimes the specific type of rock can help compensate for the lack of fabric, but you want to make sure everything aligns with what you were quoted.

In most cases, you want filter fabric to keep out debris and prevent clogging, so I'd be cautious. It's there to help your drainage system work properly over time. If debris makes its way into the pipe, it could lead to problems down the line.
