I'm curious if a range hood is generally considered an upgrade over a microwave that has a built-in vent—specifically, one that's connected to an external duct. What do you all think?

Based on my experience, microwave vents aren’t great at exhausting air. A mid-range range hood can significantly outperform even the best microwave vents. So, if you have room for a standalone microwave, I’d definitely call a range hood an upgrade! But I know some people see it differently.
It's generally agreed that range hoods are superior, especially if they vent outside. If you go for a hood that just uses a charcoal filter and recirculates air, it's pretty much the same as a microwave vent.
I’m not sure most people would view it as an upgrade since some prefer the convenience of a microwave. But performance-wise, range hoods usually win. I've found that even the top microwave exhausts don’t compare to entry-level range hoods. Plus, over-the-range microwaves tend to burn out faster due to the heat and moisture from cooking below them. If I had the choice, I'd always choose a range hood!
