Is a Tarp Roof Between Shipping Containers a Good Idea?

I've set up two 40-foot shipping containers 14 feet apart, side by side on a gravel pad, and I'm considering adding a roof between them. Initially, I thought about building a metal or plastic roof using 2x8x16ft boards, but that could get pricey and possibly raise permit issues. So, I was thinking about using a tarp instead to keep most weather off them. I rarely see snow, but rain and wind are common. If a tarp could last me 1-3 years and only costs around $200, it might be worth it — especially if I have to remove the containers eventually. Plus, I don't think a tarp would draw too much attention from permit enforcers. Any thoughts on this?

Honestly, tarps don’t hold up great in windy conditions. I had one blow away during a storm — trust me, you’re better off looking for something sturdier. Check out hoop roofs designed for shelters; they’re much more reliable than a simple tarp!

How do you know they won't work? Like, what happened exactly?

If you need just shade, consider getting a waterproof shade sail instead. Just keep in mind that any covering needs to be sloped for drainage to avoid pooling water. Otherwise, it’s a bit of a mess after a rain.

Good point! Is there any specific brand you recommend?

Before you dive into anything, it might be smart to call your local permit office. They can clarify what's allowed and share details on what options are viable without getting you into trouble. Plus, they understand the reasons behind building codes, which are meant for safety and durability.

It sounds like a pain, but you’re right. Safety first!
