I'm planning to build a fireplace in my garden, but the soil in my backyard is mostly clay and really tough to dig. I have this idea of using a tiller to loosen the top layer, then repeatedly remove soil until I reach the 6-inch depth I need for the fireplace. Before I make the purchase, I'm curious about others' experiences and opinions on using a tiller for this job. Would it be effective, or should I consider other methods?

Definitely consider renting! But if you really want to invest, go for the Wen 10 amp tiller. It's a solid option for small jobs like yours. Just remember to clear out roots and debris, and it should handle the clay better after you wet it a bit.
If it’s more of a small digging area, I'd suggest just renting a tiller instead of buying one. It might only cost you $80 to rent it for a day, and buying a tiller might not be worth it if it's just for the fireplace. But since renting costs add up, buying a budget option could be smarter in the long run!
Using a tiller alone might not be super effective since compacted clay can be tough to break up. You might want to wet the soil first to soften it up before tilling.
