Is Acrylic Yarn a Good Option for Wicking in Planter Starts?

I'm setting up sub-irrigated planter starts and want to know if acrylic yarn could work as a wick. I've been considering using shoe laces or other non-cotton materials, and I also have some jute on hand, but it doesn't seem very absorbent. Any insights on this?

You can definitely test acrylic yarn! Just place it in water and see how well it wicks up—hang it vertically and watch how the moisture travels. If you have baker's twine, give that a go too; it might offer good results!
