I'm getting ready to install laminate flooring in a room that used to have carpet. During the process, I might need to trim some moldings to fit the boards, and I've noticed that an oscillating tool can be really handy for that. I'm thinking about whether I should buy a cheaper oscillating tool or just borrow one for this project. However, I'm also considering investing in a higher-quality option like the Milwaukee M12/M18 or DeWalt models since I already have compatible tools. So I'm curious, would an oscillating tool be useful for other woodworking projects beyond this flooring task? Right now, all I have is a random orbital sander and a few hand sanders.

Oscillating tools are definitely useful, especially for DIY projects and home improvements, but in real woodworking, you might not reach for them often. If you already have batteries from Milwaukee or DeWalt, I would suggest going with whatever integrates with what you have. In my experience, even a budget model should suffice unless you're using it daily in a trade. They're pretty much standard these days!

Thanks for the insight! That was my hunch. I’ve noticed that most use the sanding attachment for stripping paint and not much else in woodworking. Considering I have a ‘mouse’ sander, I think I'll just skip the purchase for now.
