I'm looking to spruce up my IKEA Billy shelves, which have a non-porous white surface. I bought some regular Behr interior paint and I'm wondering if it's a good choice for painting them. Will it stick well, or should I consider something else?

Using Behr interior paint might not be the best idea for non-porous materials like your IKEA shelves. It's recommended to go for alkyd paint instead of latex, as alkyd tends to adhere better to slick surfaces and is generally more durable.
I tried something similar with my melamine walls! I started by applying a BIN shellac-based primer before using regular latex paint. It worked out fine after 5 years—still no peeling, but just a heads up, it's not super tough against scratches. If your shelves won't get much wear, it should be okay!
I'm all about BIN primer too! It really makes a difference on tricky surfaces. Once you get that on, you should be good with the paint. Just remember that while it looks great, it might scratch easily depending on how much you use those shelves.
