I'm thinking of getting black mulch for my yard but I'm worried about its safety, especially for my dog and the wildlife around. I read that the dyes used in black mulch are generally safe, like those in cosmetics, but low-quality mulches can contain harmful chemicals. The mulch I'm looking at is bulk, not bagged, and the supplier said it uses carbon black dye, but I'm not sure if it's MSC certified or not. Should I follow up and confirm there's no harmful stuff in it? Are the risks of chemicals in mulch something I really need to stress about, or is this just internet-fueled paranoia?

It's totally fine to ask about what's in the mulch you're getting. The dye itself isn't the main concern, but rather the wood it comes from. Dyed mulch can be made from recycled wood, and sometimes that includes CCA-treated wood which isn't great. While it usually isn't a huge issue, it can be a problem if plants are growing nearby that you or your pets might eat. I’ve had success ordering black mulch directly from a manufacturer who is transparent about their sourcing. Checking out their operation might give you peace of mind.
If dog safety is your concern, you might want to go for an undyed mulch instead. I’m all for a natural look, and it avoids any worries about dyes altogether.
Aged hemlock mulch could be a great option for you. It’s good for the soil, looks nice, and isn’t dyed, though it won't give you that black color. There's also a naturally aged red type if you're open to that! Plus, I usually get it delivered by the yard, which is super convenient.
That's good to know! I also stay in the northeast and have found reliable local suppliers for bulk mulch.
Thanks for the insight! I definitely want to avoid any contaminants, especially since I have plants for my reptiles. I think I’ll double-check about any unsafe chemicals, just to be safe.
