Is Boston Ivy a Good Choice for My Backyard?

I'm looking to add some vines to a stone pillar in my backyard and I'm considering Boston Ivy because I want something that changes color in the fall. However, I've heard that Boston Ivy can be quite aggressive in its growth. How hard is it to manage? Will regular pruning be enough, or should I expect more trouble in the future?

Yeah, I've heard that Boston Ivy isn’t too hard to control if you're proactive about it. Pruning regularly should help keep it in check. If you’re worried about invasiveness, you might consider native plants that can offer similar aesthetic value without the risk of them overtaking your garden. But if you really like Boston Ivy for that fall color, just be prepared for some upkeep!

The location really matters! Since you’re in the Chicago area, Boston Ivy can grow there, but it’s not native. It's usually manageable with some regular pruning, so as long as you keep an eye on it, you should be fine. Just make sure it has enough space to spread without becoming too unruly.
