Is Building a Couch Difficult for an Intermediate Woodworker?

I'm trying to figure out if building a couch would be a tough project for me as an intermediate woodworker. My wife and I have been struggling to find a couch that fits our space, so I thought about constructing one with just a wooden frame and then having some cushions made. It seems simple enough, but are there any challenges or things I should be aware of that could complicate the build?

What you're planning sounds doable! Just be aware that if you use it a lot, it might not be as comfortable as traditional couches, especially if it's a simple design meant for short seating times, like in dining areas. Just a thought: there are also companies offering custom or modular couches now, which might be worth checking out. We went with a modular one and it’s been great!

Upholstery can definitely be tricky if you haven't done it before. Plus, you’ll need to understand how to install the supporting frame for the cushions, like using springs or other mechanisms, so your couch doesn't feel too stiff, which is something to keep in mind.

Are you thinking of something that looks like a wooden platform for the cushions? If that’s the case, then it should be pretty straightforward. Just make sure to account for the cushion sizes when designing your frame and ensure it can handle some movement without wobbling.
