Is Building a Tool Shed Worth It Compared to Buying One?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to clear up some space in my garage so I can actually use it for workouts again. I've been checking out prefab sheds, but honestly, the prices are just crazy for what you get. I have some basic tools and plenty of weekend time, so I'm considering building a simple shed from scratch. Has anyone done this and found it worthwhile?

I built a Home Depot kit for my aunt and the parts were decent—all basic materials you'd find in store. Honestly, if you go this route, just grab some assembly instructions to guide your shopping. Open to tips? Find a retired carpenter for advice; they'd be happy to share some knowledge! You can totally do it with a bit of planning.

Thanks! I’ll check for instructions and maybe find someone with some experience to help me out.

Great tip on getting instructions! There might be free guides online, and having a mentor would really speed up the learning process.

I’m currently building an 8x12 gambrel roof shed. So far, it's way cheaper than buying a similar one pre-made, and I'm customizing it to be taller than the ones I initially looked at. Building it myself is definitely paying off!

Absolutely! It's nice to know I can tweak things to fit my needs better.

That's awesome! I love that you’re getting exactly what you want—hard to do that with prefab.

I was in your shoes about 15 years ago and went with a kit from Home Depot for ease. As I was putting it together, I realized I should have just built it myself. The kit used 2x3s and cost more than doing it from scratch! Check what they have, it’s not that hard to DIY. I'd steer clear of plastic sheds, though; I put one together for a neighbor and it was just terrible quality. Definitely not worth it!

Totally agree! And those plastic sheds have skyrocketed in price lately! What used to be $300 is now $1000+. It's just not worth it for something so flimsy.

For sure! I mean, if you're trying to save money in the long run, wood is definitely the way to go.
