Is Carpet Installation Over Vinyl a Good Idea for Longevity?

I recently had carpet installed in a small bedroom (around 10x12 ft) without the installation team removing the existing vinyl flooring. They laid padding and carpet directly over the vinyl using a tackless installation method. I'm a bit worried this could affect the longevity of my carpet. I'm caught up in a cycle of trying to reach customer service about whether I should push for the proper removal of the vinyl or if I should just ask for a refund instead. Just to note, I'm almost certain the vinyl isn't glued down because we accidentally pulled up a couple of strips while painting before the carpet went in. Also, the vinyl is a lot thinner than LVP, more like paper thickness. What do you think? Is it worth pursuing the reinstallation or should I just accept the reimbursement?

Hey! First off, it’s pretty normal to install carpet over vinyl, so you might not need to stress about it too much. If removing the vinyl wasn’t included in your initial quote, it sounds like you’re not entitled to any compensation. In fact, the vinyl could actually protect the carpet by covering up minor imperfections in the subfloor. Just make sure the tackless method is what you expected - it’s generally a solid way to go with carpet installation!

That's a good point! I guess it also depends on the vinyl type, right? For glued-down vinyl, it might not make much difference, but I wonder if LVP would be different since the carpeting could affect its ability to expand and contract with temperature changes.

Exactly! If the vinyl is loose, it shouldn't be a big deal. Plus, tacking the carpet onto it makes things easier by minimizing dust and keeping allergens at bay.

Honestly, if your vinyl wasn’t glued down, you shouldn't complain too much. Removing it would’ve created a mess and could’ve released dust into the air. With it in place, the subfloor is somewhat sealed, which might even help keep your new carpet cleaner. Just make sure you check if you were charged for vinyl removal. If you were, then definitely pursue that refund!

Thanks! I’m really sure it’s not glued since we took up some strips easily, and yes, removal was paid for, so that's why I'm unsure what to do next.

I think this could’ve been a key topic to discuss with the installation team upfront, considering it can impact your flooring choices long-term. If it is indeed glued down, then you might have a valid concern about your carpet, but if it’s not, you should feel relieved about avoiding a messy removal process.
