Is DIY Sanding and Staining My Deck a Good Idea?

I'm a first-time homeowner and not particularly skilled when it comes to home repairs. I've managed to sand and stain my new wood floors, but that was easier since the wood was custom milled and unfinished. My deck, on the other hand, has some tricky spots with old paint that I know will take some effort to fix.

I'm considering using an orbital sander for the deck flooring and a palm sander for the railings. Any tips or advice for someone who's not super handy? Thanks in advance!

I recommend pressure washing first with a wide nozzle to avoid damaging the wood. A light sanding afterwards is good but wear a mask, and when you're ready to stain, I’ve had better luck using a roller. Just keep a brush handy for edges and any tough spots. I prefer solid stains since they give better coverage, but they will need touch-ups later on.

One essential tip is to ensure all nails and screws are sunk below the wood's surface. If they stick out, you'll ruin your sandpaper fast!

Thanks for the heads-up on that!

I tackled my deck four years ago, even as a 60-year-old woman! It took a lot out of me, but it was worth it. I suggest taking your time and not rushing through it. You’ll need plenty of elbow grease, so pace yourself!
