I'm planning to create a small pathway from the sidewalk in front of my house to the utility boxes and trash cans on the side. The ground is quite rocky and has clay soil that slopes away from the house. I'm considering using bluestone pavers and filling the gaps with some ground cover. I know I'll need a weed barrier fabric, but I'm unsure if I need to till the clay and put down gravel or sand under the pavers. Are there any alternative options I should consider?

Typically, adding gravel is a good idea, especially since your soil is clay. Clay tends to shift, and if your pavers are small, they'll likely move around after some time. Going for larger pavers might reduce the movement, but gravel can help provide stability regardless. It's worth considering for the longevity of your path!

We're still in the planning stage, focusing on the excavation at the moment. We're looking at flagstones that are 1.5-2 inches thick and range from small dinner plate sizes to about 1.5-2 feet by 1 foot. We're thinking of placing the larger stones first and then filling in the gaps with smaller ones for some blue star creeper.
