Is Installing a Fence Up to the Lake for Dogs a Good Idea?

My brothers and I recently purchased a cabin on a lake in New England, and we all have dogs. We want to give them a safe space to run while we're enjoying the lake. I'm wondering if it's practical or permissible to build a fence right up to the water just for dog containment. The lake is dam-controlled, so the water level stays relatively stable (it does drop a bit in winter). I'm thinking of using aluminum for the fence instead of wood or chain link. I know the dogs could potentially swim and get out beyond the fence, but we'd supervise them, and they don't typically like swimming anyway. Before I check with the town about the regulations, I'd love to know if this is even a reasonable idea or if there are any significant drawbacks I might be overlooking.

Using a GPS collar like Halo or Spot On might be worth looking into! They work well if you have space, and the cost can be less than building a traditional fence. You should just make sure your area has cell signal. They’ve worked wonders for us with plenty of land to roam!

You might want to consider an electric fence instead! It could create a loop that stops before the water. But honestly, I’d wager it’s unlikely you’ll get permission to go right to the waterfront with anything.

Instead of a fence, have you thought about recall training? Supervised playtime can be way cheaper than building a fence, and it gives your dogs the freedom to enjoy the space. Plus, let’s be real—if I had a luxury cabin, I wouldn’t want a chain link fence ruining the view either!

Yeah, we try our best with recall, but it’s not always foolproof. I should probably talk to the neighbors, too, to see what they think.

This idea could be tricky! First, I’d start by checking if your town even allows that kind of fence. More importantly, even if you build one, nothing will stop the dogs from taking a dip and then coming out away from the fenced area. So that’s a risk to consider.

Good point! I mentioned that we’d be supervising them, and they’re not really swimmers, but perhaps that’s something I should still consider.
